It seems like every week I have a conversation with someone who asks, “Do you want to interview me on the phone?” My answer, “No, I would like to interview you in person, on camera.” Their groan isn’t always audible, but you can feel their trepidation to utter disdain.

I know it can be unnerving. For so many people, even first responders whose job it is to put their lives on the line, shutter at the thought of being in front of the camera. I get it. It’s something even I had to get used to.

Answer: By its very nature news is supposed to be…well…new. That means it’s a new issue, or we’re just new to caring about it. And what we care about today, we may have absolutely no interest in tomorrow. While I would love to call you the day before and set something up (It actually makes my life SO much easier) the problem is that we don’t always know what will be relevant days in advance. It all depends on how the story fits into the context of what else is going on and our resources.
